Pablo Schalscha

Pablo Schalscha is a visual artist living in Chile. He constructs his poetry under the logic of signage. Pablo is interested in the reproduction of language and the inventiveness that manages to appropriate this normalizing condition.

His recent works address the body as a support for the image, in a kind of soft signaling.

During his residency, he developed the project “Layer Essay,” an immersion in the language of clothing. A language, as Barthes said, “spoken by everyone and unknown to everyone at the same time… Clothing is one of those objects of communication like food, gestures, and behaviors…”. Pablo created original costumes, proposing enigmatic relationships between sign and body.

This project was born from the intersection of his work with the phenomenon of Carnival and his participation in the creation of the Panamérica Transatlântica bloco during Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival in 2019. This whirlwind and emotional mass serve as the driving force to explore this kind of ritual technology.

His residency adds his authorial interests to this web of poetic and political collaborations represented by Panamérica Transatlântica, alongside Viviana Méndez Moya, Dado Amaral, and the La Centrale 22 team.
